Stop the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Week
March 7 - 13th is "Stop the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Week".
This is your chance to help bring awareness to yourself and others and support the cause! For this week, please wear or display a fuchsia ribbon which shows that you are against sexual exploitation of children and youth. The colour fuchsia was chosen, as it is a mix between purple, worn on March 8th for International Women's Day, and red for the Red Light District.
What is sexual exploitation of children and youth?
Sexual exploitation of children and youth occurs when an older child, adolescent or adult takes advantage of a younger child or youth for sexual purposes, including for participation in prostitution, pornographic performances and in the production of pornography. Sexual abuse and exploitation is perpetrated on children of all ages, from infancy to adolescence.
What can I do?
The best thing that any person can do is to bring awareness and understanding about what sexual exploitation of children and youth actually is. Remind people that it is happening right now and in your community. So now that you have chosen to educate yourself about this issue, you can wear a fuchsia coloured ribbon and when people ask you what it is, you can explain.
Where can I go for questions or help?
- KSACC - 250-372-0179
- Talk to an adult that you know and trust
- Boys and Girls Club can direct you to the correct organization

PINK SHIRT DAY A GREAT SUCCESS!!!
A great BIG THANK YOU to all those individuals and groups that came together to raise awareness and support a fantastic cause on PINK SHIRT DAY, February 23, 2011: ANTI-BULLYING!
BGCK staff and members were adorned in our pink shirts. We sold over 1100 official anti-bullying shirts to amazing supporters of anti-bullying in our community. A special thanks to Cheryl and Steve of B100-Cheryl who braved the cold to come down on location with us at 7:00am! Thanks to Kevin @ Zack's Coffee on Victoria who let BGCK and Cheryl warm up with hot coffee and thanks to all Zack's customers who visited us and signed the Anti-Bullying Pledge! Thank you to Jesse and staff at Cafe Motivo/Cowboy Coffee on Tranquille for providing another hub for anti-bullying (and yummy warm coffee). Thanks to Flo and all the friendly enthusiastic staff at Mystic Dreams on Tranquille for your support and pledging! Thank you to London Drugs for selling Pink Shirts, and for inviting us from BGCK to raise awareness on Pink Shirt Day at their location! Thank you and congratulations to Kerilyn and the incredible Leadership Group at McGowan Park elementary for rallying an amazing 97% participation from your school staff and students in supporting the anti-bullying cause and wearing pink!!! Thank you to Henry and Stan, and Jeremy on CIFM and CFJC Midday show for promoting the day and helping to raise awareness, and airing interviews with our staff about anti-bullying and the power of all of us to stand up to bullying and make the right choices. Thank you to all the wonderful staff and students at Brock Middle School and Norkam who invited BGCK staff into their schools to create an anti-bullying "happening" where staff and students signed pledges to choose to stand up to bullying!
Many schools in our district participated in creating a sea of pink by wearing pink shirts on Feb 23. At BGCK we participated in anti-bullying week by creating themes of anti-bullying in our programs. Children and youth signed pledges and created anti-bullying posters and workshops. Our own Keystone Urban Leaders created and presented a workshop on anti-bullying for younger BGCK members. They shared personal stories about their experiences as bullies, vicitms and bystanders and reminded us that bullying affects us all.
Businesses and non-profits came forward to purchase pink shirts and remind us that bullying occurs not only in the school yard, but extends to workplaces and amongst all age ranges. Thank you to those businesses that support anti-bullying in our greater community...we even had orders as far as Prince George!
And Finally, a GREAT BIG HUGE THANKS to our wonderful community of individuals standing up to support such an important issue that touches all of our lifes. We have all played a part in bullying: as the bully, the victim and the bystander....Now is the time to stand together, acknowledge our roles and CHOOSE TO STAND UP TO BULLYING!
